This Is The End / 2017-20

This Is The End was a series of paintings based on still images taken from all films in the Jaws franchise. I was always obsessed with Jaws and the paintings attempt to cut through the often disappointingly cheesy elements obvious to most adult viewers to study the core emotions they played upon in me as an impressionable child. I wanted to avoid direct representation through the painting process – doing away with faces and eyes from both human and shark as much as possible. Any clear details in an image that hinted at a narrative would be taken out – the more pixelated and out of context the image, the better. The series ended as a study in the primitive origins of fear and anxiety, the seductive powers of both and my own experiences with panic attacks as an adult.
